Energy Projects

CVG Consulting Engineers have been involved in Renewable Energy Projects since the IPP Renewable Energy Programme was introduced by the Department of Energy in 2012. CVG have been responsible for the grid connection designs on these projects to successfully integrate the IPP projects into the Eskom National Grid. The company has a detailed understanding of the Grid connection requirements as outlined in the relevant NERSA, Eskom and South African Grid Code documentation. The following projects provide a summary of CVG involvements in these projects and the salient features have been highlighted.

2023 / Current
Front End Engineering and Design for 150MW (600MWh) Battery Energy Storage System
CVG were appointed by WSP Africa, to undertake the BESS layouts and designs for a 150MW (600MWh) Battery Energy Storage System, that will be installed as part of Eskom’s Just Energy Transition Project – Phase 1: Repurposing of Komati Coal Fired Power Plant.

SA Grid Code Studies and Design of Interconnection Substation for 2 x 75MW Wind Farms near De‐Aar Northern Cape
CVG were appointed by Adenco Construction (Pty) Ltd, the EPC contractors for Longyuan Engineering SA (Pty) Ltd, to undertake the completed detailed engineering for the IPP portions of the 2 x grid connection 132/33kV substations for two separate 75MW wind farms, namely Maanhaarberg and North. SA Grid Code Studies and Design of Interconnection Substation and Power Line for 4.8MW Hydro Power Plant near Bethlehem
CVG were appointed by Building Energy, who are the developers for a new 4.8MW Hydro Power plant to be established along the banks of the Asrivier near Bethlehem in the Free State province, to design and construction manage the entire Eskom self build works. The works consisted of the upgrade to an existing Eskom 88/11kV substation and the construction of a new 22kV overhead powerline. The services that CVG provided on the projects included the following:

Transmission

Line Projects

CVG Consulting Engineers have been involved in the design and project management of various overhead transmission lines. CVG have undertaken designs using the PLSCADD software package on lines ranging from 11kV up to 400kV. It manages the entire scope from geotechnical and topographical surveys, to designs, to construction management and supervisions. CVG is equipped to also undertake Method 4 studies on transmission line towers and supports and all designs are in accordance with SANS 10280. The following projects provide a summary of CVG involvements in transmission line projects and only the salient features have been highlighted.

Front End Engineering and Design 150MW (600MWh) Battery Energy Storage System

CVG were appointed by WSP Africa, to undertake the BESS layouts and designs for a 150MW (600MWh) Battery Energy Storage System, that will be installed as part of Eskom’s Just Energy Transition Project – Phase 1: Repurposing of Komati Coal Fired Power Plant.

Feasibility and Front‐End Engineering and Design
  • Undertook Feasibility study to determine the select the battery technology. (Considered the Use Case of the Batteries, Environmental Impact, Payback period, etc)
  • Stakeholder Involvement (workshops, caucuses, etc) to develop the BESS system, which is one of the first of its kind in South Africa.
  • Undertook detailed Option study to evacuate BESS and integrate into the national grid.
  • Undertook assessment and evaluation of existing infrastructure and considered them for re-use and integration into the new BESS system.
  • Included for the design of the Control and Instrumentation to integrate the Battery Management Systems, Energy Management Systems, HVAC systems, etc into the Scada network.
  • Involved in the preparation of section of the Initial Selection Document for the World Bank, the sponsors of the project, for purposes of pre-selecting EPC Contractors.
  • Selected the type of containerized system.
  • Instrumental in the development of the Battery model (Determining the optimal State of Charge, Cycle Depth, Depth of Discharge, calculation of Round-Trip Efficiencies).
  • Designed the BESS layout and optimized the available land space to include the required containers to provide 150MW (600MWh) capacity and considered for future augmentation.
  • Calculated Least Cost of Storage and Lowest Cost of Estimation by considering CAPEX and OPEX costs.
  • Generation of all layout designs.

  • Ensured that all infrastructure was planned and designed to ensure compliance with South African Grid Codes with respect to Protection, Metering, DC & AC Distribution and Telecontrol in the Wind Farm portion of the facility.

Preliminary and Detailed Primary Plant Design
  • The initial design called for an indoor 33kV system at the substation and a 33kV cable network for the collector system. Proposed an complete outdoor 33kV system and generated layout drawings and preliminary designs to support the proposal. Presented the Client with a detailed cost analysis of the options, which resulted in significant savings for the project, which the Client accepted.
  • Substation earth mat design for entire High Voltage Yard in accordance with IEEE Std 80 to ensure that step and touch potential levels were below the safe threshold level.
  • Modelled the earthing system for the wind turbines and generated preliminary earthgrid drawings for turbines.
  • Specification of all major High Voltage equipment, review and acceptance of equipment layout drawings provided by suppliers.
  • Generation of all layout designs, elevation drawings, stringing, etc.
  • Design of all foundations with supporting calculations (foundation designs for: equipment support steelwork, gantry columns, cable sealing ends, etc), and verification that foundations are safe for all loads encountered.
  • Design of oil containment system.
  • Design of all steelwork with supporting calculations (steelwork designs for: equipment support steelwork, gantry columns, cable sealing ends, etc).
  • Lighting Analysis to determine the average irradiance levels at various points in the substation and designing the lighting system to ensure compliance with OHS Act requirements.
  • Lightning Protection Study in accordance with SANS 62305, and undertaking a detailed risk analysis in accordance with the procedural guidelines of SANS 62305-2 to determine the Lightning Protection Class required.
